Crystal Caves of Mexico
Did you know that there are over seven billion people on Earth? Although every one of us is different, we are a lot alike, and that’s because God creates using patterns. If you’ve seen a cheetah or a peacock or even a leaf, you’ve seen a pattern.
Something else that God created with a pattern is a crystal. But the cool thing about crystals is that as those patterns form, different shapes are maa crystal found in the naica cavesde. And each crystal has a different color. For example, sapphire crystals are blue, topaz crystals are yellow, and amethyst crystals are purple. Some crystals can even be found in several different colors!
Crystals can be found all over the world, but one of the places they occur most often is in caves! In fact, because caves are large, crystals have lots of room to grow and can become very large with the right conditions! (left) Colorful fluorite crystals.
In 2000, some miners were excavating a tunnel in the already-discovered “Cave of Swords” in Naica, Mexico, when they found what looked like a huge treasure room full of the biggest crystals they had ever seen! This cavern had perfectly formed crystal blocks covering the floor, with huge crystal beams extending from those blocks. Scientists identified the crystals as selenite and they figure that the extremely hot temperatures (122 ̊F) inside the “Crystal Cave” helped them grow to their massive size.
