Bald Eagle
But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.
Bald Eagle Facts:
- Eagles have strong wings that help them soar up to 10,000 feet high and fly up to 30 miles per hour.
- They can also dive up to 100 miles per hour. (ZOOM!)
- Eagle’s nests can reach to 8 feet wide and 13 feet deep and 2000 lbs.
- The name “Bald Eagle” comes from an older meaning of the word, “white headed.
- They have over 7,000 feathers.
- The bald eagle’s range covers most of North America, including most of Canada, all of the continental United States, and northern Mexico.
- The further from the equator the larger the bald eagle. Bald Eagles in Alaska are the largest.
- The bald eagle has been the United States’ national emblem and mascot since 1782.
- They live up to about 28 years.
Eaglets
Baby eagles are called “eaglets.” When they are born they are born covered in light gray feathers. After a few weeks their feathers start to turn brown. Finally, at 4-5 years old, they are fully brown and white colored.
The babies eat raw meat (yuck) right away! And the parent eagles do not regurgitate the food like other birds do for their young. Both mom and dad eagles will bring food back to the nest–the mom eagle will spend more time there than the dad eagle. But they do share duties.
While the parent eagles may be great nest-makers they do not keep a clean nest. Leftover bits of food and eaglet poo will start to make a dirty mess in the nest. The eagle will only cover up the mess with leaves. Sometimes they will build a second nest so the messy one can get cleaned out by the weather and rain.
We definitely don’t want to cover up our messy room like the eagle does. We should always keep our living spaces clean. (especially if our parents have asked us to clean our rooms.)
At about 6 weeks they eaglets can stand and walk and after about 12 weeks the eaglets can start to fly!
And eagle does not clean it's nest. It can get quite messy in there!
