Echidna Facts:
- They look a lot like anteaters and other spiny mammals such as hedgehogs and porcupines.
- They will tear apart soft logs, anthills and use its long, sticky tongue, to collect prey.
- An Echidna tongue can reach 18 cm long – and it can flick it out to catch ants a 100 times a minute!
- They can eat about 40,000 individual ants / termites a day.
- They are equipped with electrosensors (That’s the ability to sense natural electrical stimuli-which helps them locate food like ants).
- Echidnas and the platypus are the only egg-laying mammals, known as monotremes.
- The Echidna will lay one egg.
- The have pouches like kangaroos!
- They are timid animals when they feel threatened they will ball themselves up or bury themselves.
- Their claws are are curved backwards to help them dig.
