Meerkats Facts:
- Meerkats are immune to some snake and scorpion venom.
- Meerkats live in large groups of around 30-50 members, most of them are relatives.
- The dominate female will be the leader of the group.
- A group of meerkats is called a clan, mob or gang.
- meerkats like to sunbathe, they will often stand outside their burrow catching the warm sun rays in the early morning.
- A meerkats mask helps protect their eyes by deflecting the sun.
- They eat mostly insects, worms, beetles.
- Meerkat pups will stay back at the burrow with a babysitter while the group hunts for food.
- Meerkats have a specialized thermoregulation system (ability to keep body temperature within certain boundaries) that helps them survive in the harsh desert.
- Their tail helps them to be able to balance and stand upright
- The meerkats ears are close to their heads which helps keep dirt and debris out when they are in their burrows (bolthole).

Meerkat babies are called “pups.” Here some young meerkats stand outside their burrrow sunbathing in the early morning sunshine.
Meerkats live in the desert grasslands of southwestern Botswana, western and southern Namibia, northern and western South Africa. 
Meerkats will often huddle together for warmth. The desert will often have wide ranging temperatures that get cold in the evening and blistering hot during the day.
Cool thing is that meerkats have a thermoregulation system built into them. During the day their body temperatures can reach (100.9 °F)and 36.3 °C (97.3 °F) at night.
Meerkats dig burrows with their long curved foreclaws that allow them to dig efficiently.

Meerkats are not very big around 24–35 cm (9.4 – 13.8 inches).
